What to Expect

This trail wastes no time — you're climbing from the moment you leave the parking area near the Hickman Bridge trailhead, gaining over a thousand feet of elevation across exposed slickrock and cairned switchbacks. The route follows the cliff edge above the Fremont River gorge, with the red-and-white layers of the Waterpocket Fold unfurling beside you like a geology textbook come to life. The terrain is a mix of packed dirt, sandstone ledges, and some scrambling sections that demand hands and attention. At the rim, the payoff is staggering — a birds-eye view straight down into the Fruita orchards, the historic district looking like a green postage stamp pressed into all that red rock. On a clear day, you can trace the Fold's spine for miles. This one rewards hikers who enjoy earning their views the hard way.

Safety Advisory

The rim has no railings or barriers — the cliff drops hundreds of feet with nothing between you and the canyon floor. Keep well back from edges, especially in wind.

There is zero shade on this entire route and no water sources. In summer temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees on exposed rock — carry at least two liters per person and cover your head.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early morning — the trail faces east and the first mile becomes a solar oven by mid-morning. A 7am start in summer means you summit in shade and descend before the worst heat.

Trail Tip

The trailhead shares parking with Hickman Bridge, which is far more popular. Arrive before 9am or you may end up walking the road shoulder to find a spot.

Trail Tip

Continue past the Rim Overlook another half-mile to Navajo Knobs for an even more dramatic 360-degree panorama — it adds moderate effort but doubles the reward. Most hikers turn around too soon.
