Strike Valley Overlook
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The overlook has sheer, unprotected drop-offs with no guardrails — keep a safe distance from the edge, especially in windy conditions or if hiking with children.
There is zero shade on this trail and zero water sources. In summer, exposed slickrock can push surface temperatures well above air temperature, so carry more water than you think you need for a sub-mile hike and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

Pro Tips
The trailhead sits at the end of the Upper Muley Twist Road, which requires high-clearance 4WD — do not attempt this in a sedan or you'll be walking a lot farther than 0.9 miles. Check road conditions at the visitor center before heading out.
Arrive in the last two hours before sunset when the low-angle light ignites every sedimentary layer in the Waterpocket Fold. The color difference between midday and golden hour is dramatic enough to justify timing your whole drive around it.
The overlook itself has no railing or barrier, so you can position yourself right at the edge for an unobstructed shot straight down the fold. A wide-angle lens captures the full sweep of the layered formations, but a telephoto picks out individual strata in stunning detail.
