Sunrise/Sunset Point Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The trail crosses open slickrock with little shade — in summer, surface temperatures can exceed 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Hike before 10 AM or after 5 PM from June through September, and wear shoes with good grip since polished sandstone gets slippery when covered in fine sand.
Watch your footing near the viewpoint edges. There are no guardrails and the sandstone drops away sharply in places — keep a close eye on kids.

Pro Tips
Time your visit for the golden hour before sunset — the trail name is not just marketing. Capitol Dome glows an almost supernatural orange in the last light, and you'll have the viewpoint largely to yourself since most day-trippers have moved on.
Combine this with the nearby Goosenecks Overlook and Panorama Point stops along the Scenic Drive to build a killer two-hour greatest-hits loop of Capitol Reef's best viewpoints without breaking a sweat.
Bring a polarizing filter if you shoot photos — the contrast between red rock, white sandstone caps, and Utah's deep blue sky can blow out highlights fast. The overlook also makes an excellent star photography location after dark, since Capitol Reef has some of the darkest skies in the lower 48.
