What to Expect

This short out-and-back drops you into one of Capitol Reef's quieter slots in the Waterpocket Fold — the kind of place most visitors drive right past on Notom-Bullfrog Road without a second glance. You'll start by crossing a grassy wash that feels almost pastoral, a strange contrast to the Navajo sandstone walls that quickly close in around you. The canyon narrows steadily, the walls climbing higher and the light shifting to that amber glow that slot canyon chasers live for. The turnaround is a spiraling pouroff — a dry waterfall twisted into the rock like a corkscrew, polished smooth by millennia of flash floods. At just a mile each way with easy terrain underfoot, this is a quick detour that punches well above its weight. Perfect for photographers chasing sculpted rock and anyone who wants a taste of canyon country without committing to a full day.

Safety Advisory

Flash flood risk is real in any narrow canyon in the Waterpocket Fold — check weather forecasts for the entire upstream drainage, not just the sky above you, and avoid entering if rain is anywhere in the forecast.

The pouroff at the end is a vertical drop with no barrier — keep children well back from the edge and watch your footing on the slickrock, which can be deceptively slippery when dusty.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Access is off Notom-Bullfrog Road south of Highway 24 — the turnoff is unmarked and easy to miss, so download offline maps and mark the GPS coordinates before you lose cell signal.

Trail Tip

Visit in mid-morning or early afternoon when the sun is high enough to light the canyon interior but the walls still throw dramatic shadows on the pouroff at the end.

Trail Tip

This pairs perfectly with other Waterpocket Fold stops like Headquarters Canyon or the Halls Creek Narrows trailhead — stack two or three short canyon explorations into a single drive down Notom-Bullfrog Road.
