What to Expect

This is barely a hike — more like a short stroll to one of the most jaw-dropping overlooks in southern Utah. From the parking area along the Cathedral Valley dirt road, you'll follow a gently rolling path across slickrock and desert hardpan for about a hundred yards before the earth drops away and Upper Cathedral Valley spreads out below you. The monoliths — massive sandstone towers that honestly look like they belong on another planet — rise from the valley floor in a ragged procession. The scale is almost impossible to process; these formations stand hundreds of feet tall, yet from up here they look like chess pieces arranged on a board. The whole experience takes maybe ten minutes, but you'll stand at the overlook far longer than you'll walk. Perfect for anyone who wants a world-class view without breaking a sweat.

Safety Advisory

The overlook edge is unfenced with a significant drop — keep children close and watch your footing, especially on the slickrock which can be slippery with sand on top.

Cathedral Valley is one of the most remote areas in Capitol Reef with zero cell service and virtually no other visitors on weekdays. Carry extra water, a spare tire, and let someone know your plans before heading out.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The real challenge here is getting to the trailhead, not the trail itself — Cathedral Valley requires a high-clearance vehicle and a river ford on the Hartnet Road. Check conditions at the visitor center before committing, especially after any rain.

Trail Tip

Come in the last two hours before sunset when the monoliths glow deep orange and red — the low-angle light transforms the valley from impressive to otherworldly.

Trail Tip

Pair this stop with the Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon, which sit on the valley floor below. Drive down after the overlook to see the same formations from ground level — the contrast in perspective is worth the extra time.
