What to Expect

This isn't a hike — it's a short stroll to one of the most jaw-dropping wildlife spectacles in the national park system. You'll walk a paved path from the visitor center down to a stone amphitheater built into the hillside above the Natural Entrance of Carlsbad Caverns. The seating is basic — curved stone benches arranged like a small stadium — and the stage is a gaping black hole in the earth. As dusk settles, a ranger gives a brief talk, then asks everyone to put away their phones and cameras. What follows is hundreds of thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats spiraling out of the cave in a living tornado that can last over an hour. The sound alone — a rushing, leathery whisper — is something you won't forget. This is perfect for anyone who wants a once-in-a-lifetime nature moment without breaking a sweat.

Safety Advisory

The path back to the parking lot is poorly lit after the program ends. Bring a small flashlight or headlamp, but keep it pointed at the ground — lights directed at the cave entrance disorient the bats.

Watch your step on the stone amphitheater benches in the dark. The rows are uneven and there are no handrails between levels.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Arrive at least 30 minutes before the posted flight time — seating is first-come, first-served and the best spots in the center rows fill fast on summer weekends.

Trail Tip

Bring a lightweight jacket or fleece even in July. The amphitheater sits at nearly 4,400 feet and temperatures drop fast once the sun goes down in the desert.

Trail Tip

The bat flight program is free and doesn't require cave tour tickets, so you can drive up just for the evening show — the last stretch of road into the park is worth the trip on its own as the Chihuahuan Desert turns gold at sunset.
