What to Expect

You descend into the earth and enter a chamber so vast your headlamp instinct kicks in — except the Park Service has already lit it for you. The Big Room is the largest single cave chamber in North America, a space so enormous you could park six football fields inside it with room for tailgating. The paved loop trail hugs the perimeter of this underground cathedral, passing formations with names like the Bottomless Pit and the Giant Dome, a stalagmite taller than a six-story building. The path is smooth and mostly flat with a few gentle grades, though it stays slick in places from mineral-rich moisture. The air holds steady around 56 degrees year-round, which feels like walking into a refrigerator after a New Mexico summer day. Budget more time than you think — everyone says two hours, everyone takes three. This trail is perfect for anyone who wants to feel genuinely awestruck without breaking a sweat.

Safety Advisory

The trail surface stays damp and can be slippery, especially on the slight inclines near the Hall of Giants — wear shoes with actual tread, not flip-flops, despite the easy rating.

There is no cell service underground. If someone in your group has a medical condition, let the ranger at the elevator know before heading in.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Take the elevator down rather than the Natural Entrance route if you want to save your legs for a slower, more deliberate loop through the Big Room itself — the Natural Entrance trail drops 750 feet and takes real energy you will want later.

Trail Tip

Bring a light jacket even in July. The cave sits at a constant 56 degrees with high humidity, and after 90 minutes that chill works its way through a t-shirt fast.

Trail Tip

The best photography happens at the formations farthest from the elevator entrance — Rock of Ages and the Painted Grotto see fewer crowds and have some of the most dramatic lighting in the entire chamber. A tripod is allowed and genuinely useful here since flash photography washes out the depth of the formations.
