Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The lower unpaved section passes through dense desert scrub with lechuguilla and cholla — stay on the trail and watch where you step, especially if kids or dogs are along. Those spines are no joke and will punch through thin-soled shoes.
There is zero shade on the lower loop. In summer, surface temperatures can cook well past 100 degrees by midday — carry water even for a half-hour walk and save this one for early morning or late afternoon.

Pro Tips
Walk this trail before your cavern tour, not after — your legs will thank you, and the desert context makes the underground world feel even more surreal by contrast.
The upper paved section to the viewpoint shade shelter is the money spot for the Guadalupe Mountain panorama. If you're short on time or mobility, skip the lower loop and just do this stretch.
Late afternoon light turns the desert plants golden and makes the Guadalupe ridgeline glow — photographers should time their visit for the last two hours before sunset when most visitors have already headed underground.
