What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The Natural Entrance trail drops over 750 feet in less than a mile on slick, steep pavement — it is significantly harder than it sounds, especially on the climb back up. Visitors with knee or heart conditions should take the elevator down and stick to the Big Room loop.
The cave floor and railings can be slippery from moisture. Stay on the paved trail at all times — going off-path damages formations that took thousands of years to grow and carries steep fines.

Pro Tips
Book your timed reservation on recreation.gov the moment they release — peak season slots (June-August) sell out within days, and walk-ups are not guaranteed. Morning entry times before 10 AM mean thinner crowds in the Big Room.
Wear a light jacket even in July. The cave sits at a constant 56 degrees with high humidity, and after sweating through the desert parking lot, that temperature swing hits hard. Closed-toe shoes with grip are non-negotiable on the Natural Entrance switchbacks.
Linger at the bottomless pit overlook and the Crystal Spring Dome — most visitors blow past these on the Big Room loop, but they're among the most photogenic formations. A small tripod or gorilla pod is allowed and makes a massive difference in the low light.
