What to Expect
Don't let the five-minute runtime fool you — this little paved spur punches above its weight. From the pullout along the main park road, a smooth walkway leads you to the rim of Walnut Canyon, a dramatic limestone gash that cuts through the Chihuahuan Desert like something the land kept secret. The elevation change is barely enough to notice, but the view that opens at the overlook is genuinely arresting: layer upon layer of canyon wall dropping away, pale stone baking in the desert light, scrub and sky stretching toward the Guadalupe Mountains. It's the kind of scene that makes you stop talking mid-sentence. This is the ideal trail for anyone who wants a honest taste of the park's surface landscape before descending underground — or for travelers with kids, dogs, or limited mobility who still deserve a wow moment.

Trailhead Walnut Canyon Overlook Trail
- 1
Time this for late afternoon when the canyon walls catch raking light from the west — the shadows sharpen every ledge and the limestone turns almost gold.
- 2
Pair it with the Natural Entrance or Bat Flight routes on the same visit; the overlook sets up the underground experience beautifully and adds nothing to your schedule.
- 3
Shoot from the far right end of the overlook railing for an angle that captures the canyon's depth — the center view is the obvious one and tends to flatten in photos.
