What to Expect

You step off the Island Packers boat, climb a metal-rung ladder up the sea cliff, and suddenly you're on a windswept island that feels more like the Mediterranean than California. The figure-eight loop wanders across Anacapa's flat, scrubby plateau with virtually no elevation change — this is a stroll, not a hike. But what a stroll. Nearly every turn delivers a new cliff-edge vista: crashing surf hundreds of feet below, the other Channel Islands floating on the horizon, and pelicans dive-bombing into kelp forests. The western leg brings you to the photogenic lighthouse, the last permanent one built on the Pacific coast, still operational since 1932. In spring, the entire island erupts in giant coreopsis — bizarre, Dr. Seuss-looking plants that blanket the terrain in yellow. This trail is perfect for anyone who wants jaw-dropping coastal scenery without breaking a sweat.

Safety Advisory

The cliff edges are unfenced in most areas and drop hundreds of feet straight into the ocean. The rock is crumbly volcanic tuff that can give way underfoot — stay well back from edges, especially on windy days.

Western gulls nest aggressively across the island from April through August. They will dive-bomb your head if you wander near nests. Stick to marked trails and consider wearing a hat.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Book your Island Packers ferry well in advance — Anacapa sailings from Ventura or Oxnard sell out weeks ahead, especially on weekends from March through May when the giant coreopsis is blooming.

Trail Tip

Pack every drop of water you'll need for the day. There is zero fresh water on Anacapa Island — no taps, no streams, no nothing. A liter per person minimum, more if it's warm.

Trail Tip

The Inspiration Point overlook on the east side of the loop is the single best photography spot on the island — you get all three Anacapa islets lined up with the mainland behind them. Late morning light works best when the cliffs glow golden.
