What to Expect

Before you even touch the trail, you have to earn it — 154 metal stairs climb straight up from the boat landing to the island's plateau, a welcome-to-Anacapa initiation that'll wake up your calves. Once on top, the path is a short, exposed stroll across scrubby coastal terrain with zero shade and wind that can shove you sideways. The payoff comes fast: you'll reach the iconic Anacapa lighthouse, one of the last staffed lighthouses on the West Coast, perched above cliffs that drop straight into churning Pacific. The views stretch to Santa Cruz Island and beyond, and if you're here in the right season, the rocky ledges below will be packed with barking sea lions and nesting seabirds. This is the rare trail where getting there — by boat across the channel — is harder than the hike itself. Perfect for anyone who wants a genuine island adventure without needing trail-runner fitness.

Safety Advisory

The cliff edges along the trail are unfenced and crumbly — volcanic rock breaks away without warning. Stay well back from the edge, especially on windy days when gusts can catch you off-balance.

There is absolutely no shade on the island. Sun exposure is relentless, and the ocean reflection amplifies UV. Sunscreen, a hat, and sun-protective layers are non-negotiable even on overcast days.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Book your Island Packers ferry well in advance — Anacapa trips run limited days, especially outside summer, and they sell out weeks ahead. The morning departure from Ventura Harbor gets you the calmest crossing.

Trail Tip

Pack every drop of water you'll need for the day. There is zero fresh water on Anacapa Island — no taps, no streams, nothing. A liter per person minimum, more if it's warm.

Trail Tip

Bring a zoom lens or binoculars. The cliff edges offer spectacular vantage points for photographing brown pelicans, western gulls, and California sea lions on the rocks below — but you can't get close, so glass makes the difference.
