What to Expect

This is one of those trails that reminds you why you bothered with a boat ride in the first place. From Prisoner's Harbor, you'll climb through a sun-drenched grassland dotted with island scrub oak before the trail opens up to sweeping coastal bluffs that drop straight into the Pacific. The route follows the northern spine of Santa Cruz Island, alternating between exposed ridgeline and shaded canyon crossings — the elevation gain is modest but spread across enough rollers to keep your legs honest. The payoff is Chinese Harbor, a secluded rocky cove with a sea cave you can explore at low tide, completely empty of the crowds you'd find at Scorpion Anchorage. The return trip hits different with the afternoon light painting the Channel. This trail belongs to hikers who want genuine island solitude and don't mind earning it on a clock — you're working around the boat schedule, so dawdlers beware.

Safety Advisory

The coastal bluffs are unfenced and the edges are crumbly sandstone — stay well back from cliff edges, especially when it's windy or the ground is wet from fog drip.

Island foxes are bold and will raid your pack the second you set it down. Keep food sealed and your bag zipped at all times — they're protected, and a fed fox is a problem fox.

Cell service is nonexistent on Santa Cruz Island. If you twist an ankle out here, you're relying on other hikers or waiting for the boat. Let someone on the mainland know your plan.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Island Packers drops you at Prisoner's Harbor with a fixed pickup time — know the return schedule before you step off the boat and plan your turnaround accordingly, because there is no Plan B.

Trail Tip

There is zero water on this trail and zero shade for long stretches. Carry at least three liters and a sun shirt — the island breeze tricks you into thinking you're cool while the sun quietly broils you.

Trail Tip

Time your arrival at Chinese Harbor for low tide to access the sea cave. Check NOAA tide charts for Santa Cruz Island the night before, and bring a headlamp for poking around inside the cave.
