The Quick Take

Longleaf is about as stripped-down as frontcountry camping gets, and that is entirely the point. With just a handful of walk-in sites tucked near the edge of the largest old-growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the Southeast, this campground trades every modern convenience for atmosphere. There are no showers, no potable water on site, and no camp store -- just fire pits, picnic tables, and vault toilets. You will need to drive to the visitor center for running water, which is close enough to be practical but far enough to remind you that Congaree does not hold your hand. The group sites are a genuine find for scout troops or family reunions on a budget, since the per-night fee is laughably low for a national park. Choose Longleaf if you want a quiet base camp for exploring the boardwalk trails and you do not mind roughing it a little.

Booking tip: Sites are reservable year-round and competition is light outside of firefly season, but if you are visiting in late May, book the moment your dates open up because the entire campground sells out for the synchronous firefly event.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

Bring every drop of water you will need for cooking and drinking -- the nearest spigot is at the visitor center, and making that trip after dark gets old fast. A collapsible five-gallon jug per person per day is the move.

Camping Tip

Time your visit for a synchronous firefly event in late May or early June if you can score a site. Congaree is one of the few places in the country where fireflies blink in unison, and camping here puts you steps from the show instead of fighting for parking.

Camping Tip

Cell service exists but do not count on it for streaming or heavy use. Download offline maps of the boardwalk loop and Weston Lake trail before you arrive, and bring a headlamp with a red-light mode for the walk back to your site after a night hike.
