Congaree River Bluffs Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The bluff edges are unfenced and drop steeply to the river. Keep children close at the overlook points, especially when the ground is wet and footing is unreliable.
Mosquitoes in Congaree are legendary — not a nuisance but an actual obstacle. Bring DEET or picaridin-based repellent and apply it liberally before you leave the car, particularly from April through October.

Pro Tips
Start early on weekday mornings and you may have the entire trail to yourself — even on busy park weekends, this trail sees a fraction of the boardwalk traffic.
Wear shoes with decent tread rather than sandals. The bluff sections have exposed roots and the clay soil turns slippery after any rain, especially on the slopes near the overlooks.
The best overlook for photography is roughly halfway along the bluff section where the river bends — arrive before 10 AM when the light cuts through the canopy at a low angle and the river fog hasn't burned off yet.
