What to Expect

This is one of those trails that rewards you with something genuinely rare — the actual birthplace of the Rogue River, bubbling up from the earth in a clearing you might walk right past if you weren't looking. The path winds through a mixed conifer forest that stays mercifully shaded for most of the route, with gentle elevation changes that barely register in your legs — you'll gain less than the height of a football field goal post spread over two and a half miles. The forest floor opens up in late summer with wildflower meadows, and if you keep your ears tuned you'll likely hear the unmistakable drumming of woodpeckers working the older snags. The spring itself is surprisingly large — not a trickle but a legitimate upwelling that immediately forms a creek. This is the trail for hikers who care more about the story of a place than the summit view.

Safety Advisory

Snow lingers on this trail well into late June or early July most years. The route becomes difficult to follow under snow cover, and the meadow areas near the springs can be boggy and deceptive — trekking poles help.

Mosquitoes near the springs can be absolutely punishing from late June through mid-August. Head nets and DEET are not optional during peak season.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the trailhead off NF-760 north of the park boundary — the approach from inside the park adds unnecessary distance and is often snow-covered well into July.

Trail Tip

Bring a macro lens or your phone's close-up mode. The wildflower meadows near the springs are some of the best in the park, and the light filtering through the canopy in late morning creates ideal soft conditions for flower photography.

Trail Tip

The springs area has several braided channels worth exploring beyond the main viewpoint. Follow the sound of water upstream for a quieter, less-visited section where the Rogue literally begins as groundwater seeping through volcanic rock.
