Cleetwood Cove Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The return climb gains 700 feet in one mile on loose volcanic rock with zero shade. Heat exhaustion is a real risk on summer afternoons — carry more water than you think you need and start early before the sun bakes the south-facing slope.
The rocky shoreline at the bottom is uneven and slippery when wet. There are no guardrails, and the lake drops off steeply just offshore. Keep close watch on kids near the water's edge.

Pro Tips
Time your hike to catch the boat tour to Wizard Island — tickets sell out early and depart from the dock at the bottom. Check the schedule before you start down, because missing the boat after that climb would sting.
Bring trekking poles for the return trip. The loose pumice surface is murder on your knees going back up, and poles cut your effort significantly on the steep switchbacks.
The water temperature hovers around 55-60 degrees even in August. Wade in for the bragging rights, but if you plan to actually swim, a quick-dry towel and a layer to throw on immediately after are essential — you'll cool down fast at elevation.
