What to Expect

This is barely a hike and entirely a spectacle. A flat, paved-quality path through dense forest delivers you to an overlook above Wheeler Creek Canyon, where dozens of volcanic spires — some topping 100 feet — rise from the gorge like a pipe organ carved by geology. These pinnacles formed when superheated gases from the catastrophic eruption of Mount Mazama punched through ash deposits, hardening the surrounding material into stone towers while everything around them eroded away. The walk itself takes about fifteen minutes each way with virtually no elevation change, so the real experience is standing at the railing and letting the scale of these formations sink in. Perfect for families, anyone with limited mobility who can handle a short unpaved path, or geology nerds who want to see fumarole evidence frozen in stone.

Safety Advisory

The canyon rim has railings at the main viewpoint, but sections of the trail edge near the overlook drop sharply — keep children close and stay behind barriers.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The Pinnacles sit at the far southeast corner of Rim Drive, about 45 minutes from Rim Village — most visitors skip it because of the detour, which means you'll likely have the overlook to yourself even on busy summer weekends.

Trail Tip

Combine this with the drive along the Pinnacles Road spur for additional pullouts offering different angles of the spires — the viewpoint from the trail is the best, but the road views give you a sense of the canyon's full length.

Trail Tip

Late afternoon light hits the spires from the west, turning the pumice towers golden against deep canyon shadows — bring a polarizing filter if you shoot landscapes, since the contrast between lit spires and shaded gorge is dramatic.
