What to Expect

Starting from the beautifully restored Boston Mill Visitor Center — a former paper mill dating to the 1800s — this loop eases you into the Cuyahoga Valley without demanding much from your legs. The trail threads through mixed hardwood forest along the old Ohio & Erie Canal towpath before looping back through historic sites that tell the story of the valley's industrial past. Elevation change is barely noticeable, more like a gentle roll than any real climb. The path is mostly packed gravel and boardwalk, well-maintained and easy to follow. You'll cross a couple of small bridges over side creeks and catch glimpses of the Cuyahoga River through the trees. This is the perfect introductory hike for first-time visitors who want to get their bearings, history buffs who'd rather read interpretive signs than scramble over boulders, and families looking for a low-stakes afternoon walk.

Safety Advisory

Sections near the river and canal can be muddy and slick after rain, especially on the wooden boardwalks — stick to the gravel path if conditions are wet.

Poison ivy grows aggressively along the trail margins in summer; stay on the maintained path and watch kids who might wander into the brush.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start inside the visitor center to grab a trail map and ask rangers about current conditions on connecting trails — this loop links to the Buckeye Trail and Towpath Trail if you want to extend your day.

Trail Tip

Time your visit for a weekday morning to have the interpretive signs and historic sites mostly to yourself; weekends, especially in fall, bring crowds that rival some of the more famous parks.

Trail Tip

Walk the loop counterclockwise to hit the canal-side stretch first while the morning light filters through the trees — the towpath section photographs best before midday when shadows get harsh.
