What to Expect

This three-mile stretch of the Buckeye Trail is really two hikes stitched together. Starting from the iconic Everett Covered Bridge — one of the most photographed spots in Cuyahoga Valley — the northern section throws some attitude at you with rocky, rooted terrain and rolling hills that keep your ankles honest. But once you cross into the southern half, the trail mellows dramatically into a firm, flat path that feels like a reward for your earlier effort. You'll wind through second-growth hardwood forest, catch glimpses of the Cuyahoga River valley below, and pass through quiet stretches where the only sound is your own breathing and whatever woodpecker is working overtime nearby. The finish at Botzum Trailhead feels earned but not exhausting — perfect for hikers who want a taste of terrain variety without committing to an all-day sufferfest.

Safety Advisory

The rocky northern section has exposed roots and uneven footing that can be slippery when wet — ankle-supportive footwear beats trail runners here, especially after rain.

No pets allowed on this section of the Buckeye Trail, so leave the dog at home or choose a different route in the park.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

This is a one-way trail, so arrange a car shuttle or bike drop at Botzum Trailhead before you start. Alternatively, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad stops near both ends — check the schedule and let the train handle your return trip.

Trail Tip

Start from the Everett Covered Bridge end heading south so you front-load the rocky, hilly section while your legs are fresh and finish on the easy flat stretch as a cooldown.

Trail Tip

Pause at Everett Covered Bridge before or after your hike — it's a stunner in fall color season and one of the few remaining covered bridges in Summit County. Morning light filtering through the bridge opening is worth arriving early for.
