What to Expect

This section of the Buckeye Trail starts with a bit of attitude near Pine Lane — rocky, rolling terrain that keeps your ankles honest — before mellowing into one of the most pleasant flat stretches in the Cuyahoga Valley. The first mile or so winds through hardwood forest with enough ups and downs to remind you that Ohio isn't actually flat, despite what everyone says. Then the trail settles into a smooth, packed-earth corridor that follows the contours of the valley floor. Your reward at the end is the Everett Covered Bridge, a photogenic 1870s structure spanning Furnace Run that looks like it was placed there specifically for your Instagram. The minimal elevation gain means you can actually look around instead of staring at your boots. This is a trail for anyone who wants a real walk — not a stroll, not a slog — with a destination worth reaching.

Safety Advisory

The rocky section near Pine Lane can be slippery when wet or covered in fallen leaves — watch your footing, especially in autumn when damp leaves hide uneven surfaces.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at Pine Lane and hike toward Everett Covered Bridge rather than the reverse — you get the rocky, interesting terrain while you're fresh and finish on the easy flat section when your legs are grateful for it.

Trail Tip

This is a one-way trail, so arrange a car shuttle or plan for an 8.2-mile round trip. Alternatively, park at Everett Road and do the flat section as a shorter out-and-back if you're short on time.

Trail Tip

The Everett Covered Bridge is one of the most photographed spots in the park — visit on a weekday morning in autumn when the surrounding maples are peaking and you might actually get a clean shot without other hikers wandering through your frame.
