What to Expect

Starting behind the historic Happy Days Lodge, Haskell Run Trail wastes no time getting interesting. The path drops into a ravine carved by the creek, and the footing turns rocky almost immediately — think exposed roots and uneven sandstone, not a paved stroll. At just half a mile roundtrip, this is more of a quick nature hit than a proper hike, but that short hill packs a surprising punch on the way back up. The ravine walls close in enough to feel secluded, with hemlocks and hardwoods filtering the light overhead. You'll hear the creek before you see it, and the little rocky gorge at the bottom feels like a miniature version of the bigger ravines Cuyahoga Valley is known for. This one rewards curious walkers who want a taste of the park's wilder side without committing to a full afternoon.

Safety Advisory

The rocky, root-laced terrain is uneven enough to twist an ankle if you're not watching your feet, especially on the descent into the ravine.

After heavy rain, the creek can swell and the rocks become slippery — save this one for a dry day if you're hiking with young kids.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Pair this with a visit to Happy Days Lodge itself — the restored CCC-era building has restrooms, trail maps, and occasional ranger programs that give context to the surrounding landscape.

Trail Tip

The rocky footing is manageable in trail shoes, but after rain the sandstone gets genuinely slick. Boots with decent tread make the short hill climb much less entertaining in the wrong way.

Trail Tip

This trail connects to the longer Haskell Run and Boston Run loop system — if you finish and want more, you can extend into a 3-4 mile circuit through some of the park's best ravine scenery.
