What to Expect

This is the great equalizer of national park trails — nearly twenty miles of dead-flat, crushed limestone following the route of the old Ohio & Erie Canal through the heart of Cuyahoga Valley. The elevation gain across the entire stretch is barely enough to notice, making this less of a hike and more of a long, meditative walk through Ohio history. You'll pass through thick hardwood forest, cross wooden bridges over the Cuyahoga River, and walk alongside remnants of the original canal locks that once moved goods from Lake Erie to the Ohio River. The trail threads through wetlands where great blue herons stand motionless, past restored farmsteads, and through small towns where you can grab a coffee mid-hike. Ten trailheads mean you can bite off whatever distance suits you. This trail is built for anyone who wants to cover ground without suffering — distance runners, families with strollers, cyclists, and anyone who believes flat ground is underrated.

Safety Advisory

The trail crosses several road intersections — some with limited driver visibility, especially near Boston and Peninsula. Watch for traffic and keep kids close at crossings.

Sections near the river and wetlands breed serious mosquitoes from late May through September. Long sleeves or bug spray are not optional in summer.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Use the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad as a one-way shuttle — ride the train in one direction and walk or bike back along the towpath, turning a twenty-mile out-and-back into a manageable point-to-point adventure.

Trail Tip

The stretch between Lock 29 in Peninsula and the Station Road Bridge trailhead is the sweet spot — about four miles with the most canal lock remnants, the Szalay's Farm sweet corn stand (seasonal), and easy parking at both ends.

Trail Tip

Hit the Beaver Marsh section near Ira Road at dawn or dusk for some of the best wildlife viewing in any national park east of the Rockies — beavers rebuilt this wetland from an old junkyard, and osprey, herons, and wood ducks are regulars.
