What to Expect

The Plateau Trail is one of those Cuyahoga Valley loops that lulls you into a false sense of ease before reminding you it's not entirely flat. You'll spend most of the 4.6-mile circuit wandering through mature hardwood forest on well-packed dirt singletrack, the canopy filtering light into dappled patches across the trail. The Oak Hill section delivers the one real effort — a short, punchy climb that amounts to roughly a ten-story building's worth of elevation — before rewarding you with views through the trees and a sense of accomplishment that outpaces the actual difficulty. The rest is pure Ohio woodland cruising: ferns lining the trail edges, the occasional creek crossing, and enough solitude to forget you're sandwiched between Cleveland and Akron. This is the trail for hikers who want a real walk in the woods without needing to ice their knees afterward.

Safety Advisory

Sections of the trail can be slippery when wet, particularly the Oak Hill descent where packed dirt gives way to exposed roots and leaf cover — watch your footing after rain or in early morning dew.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Run the loop counterclockwise to tackle the Oak Hill climb while your legs are fresh — the descent on the backside is gentler and makes for a more satisfying second half.

Trail Tip

The trail surface stays soft dirt through most sections, which means it turns into a mud pit after heavy rain. Check conditions after any storm and consider lightweight gaiters or trail shoes with aggressive tread if it's been wet within 48 hours.

Trail Tip

Mid-October is the money window here — the hardwood canopy puts on one of the best fall color shows in the park, and the leaf litter on the trail gives the whole loop a cathedral-floor quality that photographs beautifully in overcast light.
