What to Expect

The Towpath Trail is the backbone of Cuyahoga Valley — a crushed-limestone path that follows the old Ohio & Erie Canal corridor through some of the prettiest lowland scenery in the Midwest. These short walks cherry-pick the highlights along the full twenty-mile stretch through the park, so you're never far from a parking area or restroom. The surface is flat, firm, and wheelchair-friendly, running alongside the Cuyahoga River through bottomland forest, past restored canal locks, and over historic bridges. In spring, the river bottom erupts with wildflowers; in fall, the hardwood canopy turns the corridor into a tunnel of gold and amber. You'll share the path with cyclists, joggers, and the occasional great blue heron standing statue-still at the water's edge. This is the trail for anyone who wants to experience the valley without breaking a sweat — families with strollers, visitors in wheelchairs, or anyone who just wants an easy, beautiful walk with genuine historical texture.

Safety Advisory

The trail is not plowed in winter, and packed snow over limestone can turn icy without warning — traction devices like Yaktrax are a smart addition from December through March.

The Cuyahoga River floods periodically in spring, and low-lying sections of the Towpath can be underwater or deeply muddy for days after heavy rain — check the park's trail conditions page before heading out.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at the Lock 29 trailhead in Peninsula for the best combination of scenery, canal lock ruins, and immediate access to the village's restaurants and ice cream shops afterward.

Trail Tip

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs parallel to the trail — you can ride the train one direction and walk back, which is a perfect strategy with kids who fade halfway through a hike.

Trail Tip

Early morning on weekdays, the section between Station Road and Red Lock is nearly empty and the river fog creates dramatic photography conditions — bring a tripod and arrive by 7 AM.
