What to Expect

This southern stretch of the Valley Trail threads through some of Cuyahoga Valley's most underappreciated terrain — rolling hills draped in second-growth hardwoods, with enough ups and downs to remind your legs that Ohio is not, in fact, flat. Starting from Brecksville Reservation, the dirt singletrack winds through dense canopy, crossing ravines and skirting the edges of hemlock-shaded gorges before eventually depositing you near the Boston Store Visitor Center. The elevation changes come in short, punchy bursts rather than one sustained grind — think staircase, not escalator. In autumn, the leaf canopy turns the trail into a tunnel of copper and gold, and the soft dirt underfoot makes every step feel earned but forgiving. This one is built for the hiker who wants a solid half-day workout without needing to drive to Appalachia — close to Cleveland, far from boring.

Safety Advisory

Several creek crossings along this route lack bridges and can become slippery or impassable after heavy rain — check conditions if it has rained in the past 48 hours.

The trail shares some corridor with mountain bikers on adjacent paths. Stay alert at intersections, especially on blind corners coming out of ravines.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Run a car shuttle or arrange a pickup at the Boston Store Visitor Center — this is a one-way trail, and doubling back turns a pleasant 7-mile walk into a 14-mile death march through the same scenery.

Trail Tip

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs parallel to parts of the Valley Trail. Time your hike to catch a train back to your starting point instead of shuttling — check the CVSR schedule for Brecksville and Peninsula stops.

Trail Tip

The stretch near Stanford Road crosses through a particularly photogenic hemlock ravine. In winter, ice formations cling to the rock walls, and in summer, the temperature drops noticeably — it is the trail's hidden gem and worth a deliberate pause.
