What to Expect

You start in a narrow wash between walls of golden mudstone that look like they belong on Mars, not Earth. The first mile is flat and easy — almost suspiciously so — as the canyon walls rise around you and shift from butterscotch to deep crimson. Then the trail starts climbing through eroded badlands where every turn reveals another improbable color: ochre, rust, violet. If you push the full out-and-back to Red Cathedral, you'll be rewarded with towering red cliffs that glow like embers in afternoon light, plus views back across the valley floor to the salt flats far below. The moderate elevation gain sneaks up on you in short, steep pitches rather than one sustained grind. This trail is perfect for photographers and geology nerds who want dramatic desert scenery without a death march.

Safety Advisory

Flash floods can fill this canyon wall-to-wall with zero warning. Check weather forecasts before heading in, and skip it entirely if there's any chance of rain — even distant storms can send water roaring through.

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 120 degrees in the canyon. The NPS strongly discourages hiking here from May through September, and people die from heat exposure in Death Valley every year. This is not an exaggeration.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early morning or late afternoon — the canyon walls catch directional light beautifully, and midday sun washes out the colors that make this hike worth doing.

Trail Tip

Carry at least two liters per person even in cooler months. There is zero shade and zero water on this trail, and the reflective canyon walls amplify heat like an oven.

Trail Tip

Do the full loop by continuing past Red Cathedral to Zabriskie Point and arranging a car shuttle — it turns a there-and-back into a one-way traverse with a killer finale overlooking the badlands from above.
