What to Expect

This loop is Death Valley's geology classroom, and you don't need a degree to appreciate the lesson. You'll start in Golden Canyon, where the walls close in around you in layers of mustard, rust, and cream — sediment stacked like a tilted layer cake. The route climbs steadily through narrows before spitting you out at Red Cathedral, a towering amphitheater of iron-stained cliffs that glow like embers in morning light. From there, the trail crests a ridge with sweeping views of the Badwater Basin before dropping into Gower Gulch, a wide wash that feels like walking on another planet. The elevation gain is steady but never punishing — think sustained effort, not scramble. This loop rewards hikers who love reading landscapes and don't mind fully exposed terrain in exchange for some of the most surreal desert scenery in the Lower 48.

Safety Advisory

There is zero shade on this entire loop. Heat exhaustion is a real risk even on mild days — the canyon walls act as a reflective oven, and ground temperatures can run 30-40 degrees hotter than the air.

Flash floods can turn Golden Canyon and Gower Gulch into deadly torrents with almost no warning. Check weather forecasts for the surrounding mountains, not just the valley floor, and never enter the canyons if rain is anywhere in the region.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at the Golden Canyon trailhead and hike the loop clockwise — you get the canyon narrows while your legs are fresh and finish on the easier wash descent through Gower Gulch.

Trail Tip

Carry at least two liters per person and start before 9 AM from November through March; by midday even in winter, the reflected heat off the canyon walls adds ten degrees to whatever your weather app says.

Trail Tip

Pause at the Red Cathedral overlook and look back toward the canyon mouth — the layered erosion patterns photograph best when the sun is still low and angled, casting deep shadows into the folds of the badlands.
