Riley Creek
The Quick Take
Riley Creek is Denali's basecamp — the campground you pick when you want to actually get things done. It sits right at the park entrance, connected by trail to the Visitor Center, with a camp store, laundry, and even WiFi within walking distance. The trade-off is real: you'll hear highway traffic, and the vibe is more 'well-organized staging area' than 'backcountry solitude.' But for a park where the best experiences require catching early-morning buses deep into the interior, that convenience is worth more than ambiance. It's also the only campground open year-round, which makes it the default for shoulder-season and winter visitors. The wooded sites offer decent screening from neighbors, and at over a hundred sites, it's Denali's largest frontcountry campground. Choose Riley Creek if you're treating Denali as a multi-day expedition and need a reliable home base with real amenities.

Pro Tips
Summer sites book fast through Recreation.gov, but the campground is free and first-come-first-served outside the May-to-September window — show up in late September for fall color and zero crowds, though only one loop stays open.
The trail from camp to the Denali Visitor Center connects to the entire entrance-area trail network, including the Horseshoe Lake and Rock Creek trails. You can spend a full rest day hiking without moving your car.
There are no showers or flush toilets at Riley Creek, which surprises a lot of first-timers expecting full-service at the park's flagship campground. The nearest showers are at commercial facilities just outside the park entrance — budget a few bucks and a short drive.
