What to Expect

This is barely a trail and more of a pleasant excuse to stretch your legs — a quick connector path that links Rock Creek Trail to Roadside Trail through a pocket of subarctic meadow. At just a third of a mile one way, you can walk it in ten minutes without breaking a sweat. The narrow tread weaves along the edge of open meadow, where wildflowers carpet the ground in July and the grasses turn gold by late August. Don't expect drama here; expect quiet. The views across the meadow can surprise you with moose browsing in the morning mist or a red fox trotting through the sedges. This is the trail for anyone who wants a peaceful detour between longer routes, families with small kids who need a quick win, or photographers waiting for wildlife to wander into frame.

Safety Advisory

Moose frequent this meadow and can be aggressive, especially cows with calves in spring and early summer. Give them at least 25 yards and never position yourself between a cow and her calf.

The narrow tread can be muddy and slick after rain — watch your footing, particularly where the trail transitions between tree cover and open meadow.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Use this as a strategic link — combine it with Rock Creek and Roadside Trails to build a loop walk near the park entrance area without retracing your steps.

Trail Tip

Early morning visits, especially in late June through mid-July, give you the best chance of spotting moose feeding in the meadow. They tend to move off once foot traffic picks up.

Trail Tip

The meadow opening makes a surprisingly good wide-angle photography spot with the Alaska Range as a backdrop on clear days — position yourself at the midpoint of the trail where the treeline drops away.
