What to Expect

This is less a hike and more a pleasant roll — a paved, flat mile running alongside the Parks Highway from the park entrance toward the dramatic Nenana River Canyon. The smooth surface makes it a breeze underfoot (or under wheel), and the roadside setting means you're never far from civilization, but the views more than compensate. The Nenana River rushes alongside portions of the route, and on clear days the Alaska Range fills the horizon with a wall of snow-capped peaks that makes you forget you're walking next to a highway. The trail works beautifully as a warm-up before heading deeper into Denali or as an end-of-day leg-stretcher when you're too tired for anything ambitious. Families with strollers, casual walkers, and anyone who just wants to breathe subarctic air without breaking a sweat will love this one.

Safety Advisory

The trail runs close to the Parks Highway, so keep children and dogs (where allowed) well away from the road edge — truck traffic moves fast and drivers aren't always watching for pedestrians.

Moose encounters are common along the river willows. Give them at least 50 yards of space and never position yourself between a cow and her calf.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Use this as a shakedown walk your first evening in Denali — it lets you scope out the Nenana River Canyon overlooks and figure out which rafting outfitters are nearby before committing to a trip.

Trail Tip

The trail connects to the area around Glitter Gulch (the tourist strip outside the park entrance), so you can walk to dinner at one of the restaurants rather than driving and fighting for parking.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars even for this easy stretch — moose frequently browse the willows along the river corridor, especially in the early morning and late evening hours.
