Bear Lake Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Mosquitoes in the Flamingo area can be genuinely dangerous in wet season — not just annoying, but swarm-level dense. Check the Everglades mosquito forecast before committing to this trail.
American crocodiles and alligators inhabit the brackish waters around Bear Lake. Stay on the trail and keep a healthy distance from the shoreline.
The trail is unmaintained and poorly marked in places. Carry a GPS-capable device — getting turned around in dense hammock with limited cell signal is a real possibility.
Trail Details
- 1
Check with the Flamingo Visitor Center before heading out — trail conditions shift dramatically between wet and dry season, and sections can be underwater from June through November.
- 2
Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes with good ankle support. The unmaintained path means ankle-twisting roots and shin-height vegetation are the norm, not the exception.
- 3
Bring serious insect repellent with DEET or picaridin. The shaded hammock with standing water nearby is prime mosquito territory, especially in the hours after dawn and before dusk.
