What to Expect

This is one of the shortest walks in the Everglades, but what it lacks in mileage it makes up for in sheer scale of view. A flat, paved interpretive path leads you through a brief corridor of tropical hardwoods before depositing you onto a raised wooden observation platform. From there, the world opens up — an unbroken expanse of sawgrass prairie stretching to the horizon in every direction, the River of Grass laid bare in a single panorama. It looks like someone flattened the entire state of Florida and covered it in golden-green marsh, which is essentially what happened. Interpretive signs along the way explain the hydrology that keeps this whole improbable ecosystem alive. This is the trail for anyone who wants to understand what the Everglades actually are, not just walk through them. Perfect for first-time visitors, photographers, and anyone with ten spare minutes.

Safety Advisory

Mosquitoes here range from aggressive to biblical depending on the season — during summer wet season, they can drive you back to your car in minutes. Long sleeves and a quality DEET-based repellent are non-negotiable from May through October.

The overlook platform offers zero shade. Even on a mild winter day, the reflected sun off the sawgrass can be intense. Sunscreen and a hat matter more here than you'd expect for a five-minute walk.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Visit in the late afternoon when the low-angle sun turns the sawgrass prairie into liquid gold — the overlook faces west-southwest, making it one of the better sunset viewing spots along the main park road.

Trail Tip

Combine this with the nearby Mahogany Hammock trail for a satisfying one-two punch of Everglades ecosystems in under an hour — they're only a few miles apart on the main road.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars rather than a telephoto lens. The overlook's real power is the vastness of the view, and you'll spot wading birds, hawks, and vultures riding thermals across the prairie that are too distant for most camera setups but gorgeous through glass.
