What to Expect

Starting from the South Shore Trailhead along Two Medicine Lake, this short stroll through dense subalpine forest delivers a surprisingly rewarding payoff for minimal effort. The trail follows a well-maintained path with gentle grades — the total elevation gain is barely noticeable, more of a leisurely uphill lean than anything resembling a climb. You'll wind through lodgepole pine and spruce with occasional glimpses of the surrounding peaks before the trail opens up to Aster Falls, a picturesque cascade that tumbles over a rocky ledge into a mossy pool below. The falls aren't massive, but they're photogenic and uncrowded compared to the more famous stops in Glacier. This is the perfect trail for families with young kids, anyone recovering from yesterday's ambitious ridge hike, or visitors who want a quick dose of Montana waterfall magic without committing to a full day on the trail.

Safety Advisory

This is grizzly bear country. Carry bear spray, make noise on the trail, and never approach wildlife. The Two Medicine Valley sees regular bear activity, especially in berry season from late July through September.

Rocks near the base of the falls can be slippery when wet. Watch your footing if you scramble down for a closer look, especially with kids.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Continue past Aster Falls another half mile to reach Rockwell Falls, which is larger and more dramatic — doing both as a single out-and-back adds minimal effort and doubles your waterfall count.

Trail Tip

The South Shore Trailhead parking area fills up by mid-morning in July and August. Arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM, or take the historic boat shuttle across Two Medicine Lake and approach from the west end for a completely different perspective.

Trail Tip

The falls photograph best in the morning when soft light filters through the trees and avoids the harsh midday shadows that wash out the cascading water. Bring a polarizing filter if you have one — it cuts the glare on the wet rocks.
