What to Expect

This is one of Glacier's best-kept quick stops — a short, steep descent from the Sunrift Gorge pullout on Going-to-the-Sun Road that drops you right to the base of a thundering waterfall in about ten minutes. The trail loses elevation quickly on a rocky, root-laced path through dense cedar and fir, so your knees do the work on the way down and your lungs pay for it on the climb back up. At the bottom, Baring Creek pours over a broad rock ledge into a mossy, mist-filled alcove that feels completely hidden from the road above. The falls aren't the tallest in the park, but the tight canyon amplifies the sound into something almost theatrical. This is the perfect trail for families with antsy kids, photographers chasing that moody forest-and-water shot, or anyone who needs to stretch their legs during the Sun Road drive without committing to a full hike.

Safety Advisory

The rocks near the base of the falls are slick with spray year-round. Watch your footing, especially with kids — a slip here means wet rocks and cold water, not a gentle landing.

Grizzly bears frequent the Baring Creek drainage. Make noise on the descent and don't linger at the falls with food out.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your stop for late morning when the sun clears the canyon rim and lights up the mist at the base of the falls — the spray catches light beautifully from about 10am to noon in midsummer.

Trail Tip

The Sunrift Gorge pullout fills up fast on summer afternoons. Grab the spot on your eastbound (morning) drive rather than fighting for parking on the return trip.

Trail Tip

After seeing the falls, you can continue along the lakeshore trail to connect with the St. Mary Falls and Virginia Falls trails — turning a ten-minute detour into a legitimate two-hour waterfall crawl without returning to your car.
