What to Expect

This is one of Glacier's quieter rewards — a 7-mile one-way ramble along the shore of Bowman Lake, tucked into the remote northwest corner of the park where most visitors never bother to venture. The trail rolls through dense old-growth cedar and hemlock forest, occasionally breaking open to reveal the kind of turquoise water that makes you question whether Montana is secretly the Caribbean. The terrain is gentle but uneven, with root-laced sections and occasional muddy stretches that keep things interesting without ever getting punishing. At the head of the lake, you're dropped into a wide glacial valley framed by jagged peaks — a payoff that feels earned but not brutal. This is the trail for hikers who want genuine backcountry solitude without needing mountaineering skills or a death wish.

Safety Advisory

This is prime grizzly country with low hiker traffic, which means bears are less habituated to people. Carry bear spray accessible on your hip, make noise consistently, and travel in groups when possible.

The trail is 14 miles round-trip with no reliable water treatment stations — bring a filter and at least two liters per person. Late-season creek crossings near the lake's head can run surprisingly cold and swift.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The road to Bowman Lake is unpaved, narrow, and rutted — plan an extra 30-45 minutes from Polebridge and skip the low-clearance rental car. The drive alone filters out most of the crowd.

Trail Tip

Make this a full-day adventure by packing a lunch to eat at the lake's head, where you'll have a natural amphitheater of peaks and almost certainly no company. The flat gravel shore makes a perfect picnic spot.

Trail Tip

Stop at the Polebridge Mercantile on the way in for their legendary huckleberry bear claws — they're cash only, and they will sell out by early afternoon in summer.
