What to Expect

Starting from the Two Medicine area's South Shore Trailhead, you'll warm up with a relatively mellow stretch along the south edge of Two Medicine Lake before the trail reveals its true intentions. Once you leave the lakeshore behind and begin climbing toward the hanging valley, the switchbacks get serious — nearly 1,400 feet of elevation gain that will have your quads filing a formal complaint. The forest thins as you ascend, opening up to subalpine meadows that explode with wildflowers in late July. The payoff is a glacially carved cirque lake sitting in a dramatic rocky bowl, its water an almost unreal shade of blue-green that justifies the name. On a still morning, the surrounding cliffs reflect perfectly off the surface. This trail rewards hikers who don't mind earning their views the hard way and prefer destinations over drive-up overlooks.

Safety Advisory

This is prime grizzly bear country — the Two Medicine valley is one of Glacier's most active corridors. Carry bear spray accessible on your hip, make noise on blind corners, and never hike alone if you can avoid it.

Afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast during July and August. The upper trail above treeline offers zero shelter, so check the forecast and plan to be descending by early afternoon.

Snow can linger on the upper switchbacks and near the lake well into July. Early-season hikers should be prepared for icy traverses on steep terrain — microspikes are worth the weight.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early from the Two Medicine entrance — the parking area at South Shore fills up by mid-morning in July and August, and there's no overflow lot nearby.

Trail Tip

The last reliable water source is along Two Medicine Lake's shore early in the hike. Carry at least two liters for the climb, as the upper switchbacks are bone-dry and fully exposed on warm afternoons.

Trail Tip

The best light on Cobalt Lake hits in the morning when the sun illuminates the cirque walls behind the lake. Afternoon brings harsh shadows and often builds thunderheads, so photographers should aim to reach the lake by 10 AM.
