What to Expect

Starting from the Sperry Trailhead, Fish Lake shares its opening act with one of Glacier's most famous routes before branching off into quieter territory. The first stretch climbs steadily through dense subalpine forest, gaining about a thousand feet over less than three miles — enough to get your heart rate up without destroying your knees. The trail winds through corridors of spruce and fir, with occasional openings that offer glimpses of the surrounding peaks. The payoff is Fish Lake itself, a modest alpine lake tucked into a forested basin where the silence is almost startling after the busier trailheads below. Don't expect the dramatic turquoise of Grinnell — this is a darker, tree-ringed lake with a more intimate feel. Hikers who prefer earning their solitude over chasing Instagram spots will find exactly what they're looking for here.

Safety Advisory

This is prime grizzly bear country — carry bear spray, make noise on the trail, and be especially alert around the lake where bears come to drink and forage.

Snow can linger on the upper portions of this trail well into July. Early-season hikers should expect slippery, obscured tread and the possibility of losing the trail beneath snowpack.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early to snag parking at the Sperry Trailhead, which fills up fast since it also serves the popular Sperry Chalet and Sperry Glacier routes — by 8 AM in peak season, you may be walking from overflow.

Trail Tip

The junction where Fish Lake splits from the Sperry Trail is easy to miss if you're on autopilot following the crowd uphill. Watch for the signed fork and take the less-trafficked branch — most hikers blow right past it headed for Sperry Chalet.

Trail Tip

Fish Lake's shoreline has a few flat spots on the north side that make excellent lunch perches. The afternoon light filtering through the trees hits the water nicely if you time your arrival for early afternoon.
