What to Expect

This is Glacier's quieter side — a long, mostly flat ramble through old-growth cedar and hemlock forest along the western shore of Lake McDonald, the park's largest lake. You'll start from either Fish Creek Campground or the north end near Lake McDonald Lodge, tracing the shoreline through dense canopy with intermittent openings that frame the water against the Livingston Range. The trail rolls gently over roots and packed dirt, occasionally dropping to rocky beach access points where the lake stretches out like a sheet of blue-green glass. At nearly fifteen miles round-trip if you go end-to-end, most hikers pick a direction, walk until they find a private stretch of shoreline, and turn around. This is the trail for people who want Glacier without the crowds, the switchbacks, or the drama — just forest, water, and silence.

Safety Advisory

This is grizzly country year-round. Carry bear spray, make noise on blind corners through the dense forest sections, and check recent bear activity reports at the ranger station before heading out.

The trail can be muddy and slick with root tangles after rain, especially through the old-growth sections — ankle-supporting footwear beats sandals here despite the flat terrain.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Set up a car shuttle by parking at both Fish Creek Campground and Lake McDonald Lodge to hike the full 7.4 miles one-way without backtracking — the logistics pay off with a much more satisfying day.

Trail Tip

The unmarked beach access points about two miles in from the Fish Creek side offer the best swimming spots in midsummer, when the shallow south end of the lake warms enough to be tolerable.

Trail Tip

Hit this trail during Going-to-the-Sun Road's peak congestion in July and August — while everyone else is gridlocked at Logan Pass, you'll have this entire shoreline nearly to yourself.
