What to Expect

Piegan Pass starts deceptively gentle, winding through subalpine forest along the south shore of Preston Park before the trail reveals its true intentions. The middle stretch climbs steadily through some of the most jaw-dropping wildflower meadows in all of Glacier — if you time it right in late July, the slopes explode with beargrass, paintbrush, and glacier lilies. Above treeline, the trail gets rocky and exposed as it switchbacks up to the pass itself, a narrow saddle wedged between Piegan Mountain and Pollock Mountain with views that'll make you forget about your screaming quads. You're staring straight into the heart of the Continental Divide, with distant glaciers and the sheer walls of the Garden Wall stretching north. The elevation gain is honest but never cruel — no scrambling, just steady uphill work. This trail rewards fit hikers who want alpine grandeur without technical terrain.

Safety Advisory

Grizzly bear activity is frequent along this corridor, especially in the berry-rich meadows of Preston Park. Carry bear spray accessible on your chest or hip, travel in groups of three or more, and make noise consistently — this is not a trail where you want to round a blind corner quietly.

The upper mile above treeline is fully exposed with no shelter. Afternoon thunderstorms build fast over the Divide from mid-July onward and lightning on the pass is genuinely dangerous — watch the sky and turn back if clouds start stacking before you summit.

Snow lingers on the north-facing approach to the pass well into July most years. Early-season hikers should expect to cross steep snowfields without a visible trail — microspikes and trekking poles are strongly recommended before mid-July.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from Siyeh Bend trailhead on Going-to-the-Sun Road for the standard 9-mile roundtrip rather than Many Glacier — the Many Glacier approach adds nearly 8 miles and over 900 feet of extra gain with relatively little additional payoff.

Trail Tip

Hit the trail by 7:30 AM to snag parking at the small Siyeh Bend pullout, which fills completely by mid-morning in July and August. There's no overflow lot, and walking the road shoulder is not safe.

Trail Tip

The meadows between miles 2 and 3 are the best wildflower photography in Glacier, bar none — bring a wide-angle lens and plan to linger. Peak bloom is typically the last week of July through the first week of August.
