What to Expect

Starting from the Two Medicine area's South Shore Trailhead, this out-and-back follows the southern edge of Two Medicine Lake before ducking into the forest toward Rockwell Falls. The trail is well-maintained and mostly shaded, winding through dense stands of spruce and fir with occasional glimpses of Rising Wolf Mountain looming to the north. The elevation gain is gentle enough that you'll barely notice it — think steady stroll, not stairclimber. The payoff is a powerful cascade where Rockwell Creek drops through a narrow rock chute into a misty pool below. It's not Glacier's tallest waterfall, but the setting feels intimate and uncrowded compared to the park's marquee attractions. This is a perfect trail for hikers who want a rewarding destination without committing to an all-day sufferfest.

Safety Advisory

This is grizzly bear country — carry bear spray, make noise on the trail, and never approach wildlife. The Two Medicine valley has active bear traffic, especially in huckleberry season from late July through August.

The rocks near the base of the falls are slick with spray and algae. Stay behind the informal viewing area rather than scrambling down to the water's edge.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the South Shore Trailhead at the boat dock — you can also catch the historic Sinopah boat shuttle across Two Medicine Lake to shave distance, but hiking the full route along the lakeshore is half the experience.

Trail Tip

The falls run strongest in June and early July during snowmelt; by late August the flow can thin to a trickle, so time your visit accordingly if the waterfall is the main draw.

Trail Tip

The rocky outcrop just below the falls viewpoint makes an excellent lunch spot with natural seating — arrive before noon to claim it on busy summer weekends.
