What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The upper ridge is extremely exposed to wind and lightning. If you see clouds building or hear distant thunder, turn around immediately — there is nowhere to shelter above treeline.
Mountain goats frequent this trail and can be aggressive, especially nannies with kids in early summer. Maintain at least 50 yards of distance and never get between a nanny and her young.
Snow lingers on the upper switchbacks well into late June. If you encounter icy traverses without microspikes, the smart move is to turn back — a slip on those angles sends you a long way down.

Pro Tips
Start early, ideally before 8 AM. The trail is fully exposed with zero shade, and afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast during July and August — you want to be off the ridge by noon.
Trekking poles are borderline essential for the descent. The upper section is loose rock and scree, and tired legs on steep downhill is a recipe for a twisted ankle.
The best photo opportunities are about three-quarters of the way up where Two Medicine Lake frames perfectly between the ridgelines. The summit itself offers a 360-degree panorama, but that mid-trail composition with the lake below is the shot you want.
