What to Expect

Starting from the Many Glacier Hotel area, Swiftcurrent Nature Trail loops you around the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake with the kind of effortless scenery that makes you wonder why anyone suffers through a death march to get views like these. The first stretch past the Grinnell Glacier trailhead is paved and flat enough for strollers and wheelchairs, then the path transitions to packed dirt winding through subalpine meadows and stands of spruce. You'll have Mount Grinnell and Grinnell Point looming directly across the water for most of the walk — the reflection on a calm morning is almost absurd. Moose browse the willows along the lakeshore regularly, and wildflowers carpet the meadows in July. This is the trail for anyone who wants Glacier's grandeur without Glacier's grunt work — families, photographers, and hikers looking for a mellow warm-up before tackling Grinnell Glacier the next morning.

Safety Advisory

Grizzly bears are active throughout the Many Glacier valley — carry bear spray, make noise on blind corners through the spruce sections, and never approach moose or bears along the lakeshore regardless of how calm they appear.

The trail can be muddy and slick in sections after rain or snowmelt, particularly on the far side of the loop away from the hotel — sturdy shoes with grip beat sandals here even though the trail is technically easy.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Walk the loop counterclockwise starting from Many Glacier Hotel to get the best morning light on Mount Grinnell across the lake — the reflection shots are significantly better before the afternoon wind picks up and ripples the surface.

Trail Tip

Time your walk for early morning or dusk and scan the willows along the south shore carefully — this stretch is one of the most reliable moose-viewing spots in the entire Many Glacier valley.

Trail Tip

Use this trail as a shakedown hike the evening you arrive at Many Glacier; it lets you scout the Grinnell Glacier trailhead, get your bearings on the valley layout, and check current trail conditions on the bulletin board without committing to anything strenuous.
