What to Expect

You start from the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn lot and immediately plunge into a trail that earns every bit of its strenuous rating. The first few miles lull you through dense forest along the shores of several lakes — Fishercap, Redrock, Bullhead — each one a postcard that tempts you to call it a day early. Don't. Beyond the lakes, the trail tilts upward in earnest, climbing through alpine meadows exploding with wildflowers in July and August before grinding up a series of switchbacks to the pass itself at around 7,600 feet. The panorama from the top is staggering: the Garden Wall drops away to the west, Grinnell Glacier hangs in the distance, and you can see clear into the Granite Park basin. Nearly fourteen miles round trip with over two thousand feet of climbing means this trail rewards hikers who enjoy a full-day commitment and have the legs to prove it.

Safety Advisory

Snow lingers on the upper switchbacks and the pass well into July most years. Steep snow traversals without traction devices have caused serious falls — check trail status reports before heading out.

This is one of the most active grizzly bear corridors in Glacier. Travel in groups of three or more, make noise continuously above Bullhead Lake, and know how to deploy bear spray under pressure.

Afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast above treeline. The exposed switchbacks and the pass itself offer zero shelter — plan to be off the high ground by early afternoon.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start by 7 AM to claim parking at the Swiftcurrent lot — it fills by mid-morning in peak season, and the shuttle from other lots adds time you'll want on the trail.

Trail Tip

Carry bear spray in your hand, not buried in your pack. The stretch between Bullhead Lake and the pass is prime grizzly habitat, and surprise encounters happen every season along this corridor.

Trail Tip

If you can arrange a shuttle, do the point-to-point from Swiftcurrent Pass down to the Granite Park Chalet and out via the Highline Trail to Logan Pass — it's one of the finest one-way traverses in the entire park and avoids retracing your steps.
