What to Expect

This is one of Glacier's best-kept secrets for hikers who want alpine lake scenery without the quad-destroying climbs. From the North Shore Trailhead, the path traces the edge of Two Medicine Lake through dense conifer forest, occasionally breaking open to jaw-dropping views of Sinopah Mountain reflected in impossibly clear water. The elevation gain is barely noticeable — spread across five miles, it feels more like a long stroll than a hike. The trail surface is well-maintained dirt with occasional root tangles and rocky stretches near creek crossings. The payoff is Upper Two Medicine Lake itself: a smaller, quieter basin ringed by sheer walls that feels genuinely remote despite the moderate effort to reach it. If you want the shortcut, the concessionaire boat shaves off the first couple miles and drops you closer to the good stuff. Perfect for families with older kids, photography-obsessed hikers, or anyone who wants wilderness solitude without suffering for it.

Safety Advisory

This is grizzly country, full stop. Carry bear spray, make noise on blind corners, and never hike alone in the early morning or late evening when bears are most active along the lakeshore.

Creek crossings can run high and fast in June and early July during snowmelt — waterproof boots or trekking poles help, and be prepared to turn back if the water looks sketchy.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Take the boat one way and hike the other — you get the full trail experience without the ten-mile round trip, and you arrive at the upper lake with fresh legs for exploring.

Trail Tip

The morning boat is your best bet: you'll have the upper lake nearly to yourself before the afternoon hikers arrive, and the light on the surrounding peaks is spectacular before noon.

Trail Tip

Pack a lightweight camp chair or sit pad — the rocky shoreline at Upper Two Medicine Lake is prime lunch territory, but the boulders are unforgiving on your backside during a long rest.
