What to Expect

Ken Patrick is the North Rim's best-kept secret — a ten-mile point-to-point traverse that trades the crowded rim overlooks for deep ponderosa pine forest, aspen groves, and fleeting canyon glimpses that hit harder because you earned them. Starting at Point Imperial (the highest point on either rim), the trail rolls through mixed conifer forest with enough ups and downs to keep your legs honest, though nothing as punishing as the corridor trails below. The path is narrow, often overgrown by midsummer, and crosses several meadows where mule deer practically pose for you. Burned sections from past fires open up unexpected panoramas of the eastern canyon. The final stretch drops you at the North Kaibab trailhead parking lot, so arrange a shuttle unless you fancy a road walk back. This one rewards hikers who value solitude over spectacle — you might not see another soul for hours.

Safety Advisory

The trail is poorly marked in several sections, particularly through burned areas where cairns and blazes have been lost — download the GPS track beforehand rather than relying on trail signage.

Fallen trees frequently block the path, especially early in the season before trail crews clear them, which can add significant time and route-finding difficulty to an already long day.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at Point Imperial and hike toward the North Kaibab trailhead — this direction is net downhill and puts the best views behind you early, keeping you motivated through the forested middle miles.

Trail Tip

Stash a car or arrange the Trans Canyon Shuttle at the North Kaibab parking area before you start — hitching a ride back to Point Imperial is possible but unreliable, especially late in the day.

Trail Tip

Carry at least three liters of water; there are no reliable water sources along the entire route, and the North Rim's 8,000-foot elevation will dehydrate you faster than you expect.
