What to Expect

Widforss Trail is the North Rim's best-kept secret — a ten-mile round trip that earns you a stunning canyon viewpoint without the crowds or the knee-destroying descents of the South Rim trails. The first half meanders through a ponderosa pine and spruce-fir forest, dipping in and out of shallow side canyons with teasing glimpses of the gorge below. The trail surface is mostly packed dirt with occasional roots and rocks, nothing technical. Grab the self-guiding brochure at the trailhead — it turns a pleasant forest walk into an impromptu botany lesson. The payoff at Widforss Point is a panoramic view into the Transept and across to Brahma and Zoroaster Temples that rivals anything on the South Rim, minus about ninety percent of the people. This is the trail for hikers who want a full day out without feeling wrecked afterward, and for anyone who thinks the Grand Canyon is only about looking down.

Safety Advisory

The North Rim sits above 8,000 feet — if you are coming from low elevation, the altitude can sneak up on you. Pace yourself on the outbound leg and carry more water than you think you need.

The trail passes near unfenced canyon edges at several viewpoints and at the final overlook. The drop-offs are real and unforgiving — keep children close and watch your footing on loose gravel near the rim.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

You do not have to commit to the full ten miles — the first two miles through the forest are lovely on their own and make a great leg-stretcher if you arrived at the North Rim late in the day.

Trail Tip

Pack a lunch and eat it at Widforss Point. There is a picnic table at the overlook, and eating a sandwich while staring into one of the deepest canyons on Earth is an underrated life experience.

Trail Tip

Morning light hits the eastern-facing canyon walls beautifully from Widforss Point, so an early start (on trail by 7 AM) rewards photographers with warm golden light and almost guaranteed solitude.
