Gros Ventre Campground
The Quick Take
Gros Ventre is Grand Teton's biggest campground by a wide margin, and that size is both its greatest asset and its main knock. Spread across a sagebrush flat along the Gros Ventre River, it trades the postcard-perfect lakeside setting of Jenny Lake or Signal Mountain for something increasingly rare in peak season: availability. You are closer to Jackson than any other park campground, which means easier resupply runs but also more road noise and a slightly less wild feel. The cottonwood-lined river loops are the sweet spots, with legitimate Teton views and regular bison parades at dawn. No showers, no hookups, and pit toilets keep things rustic despite the price tag. Choose Gros Ventre if you want a reliable base camp without the lottery-ticket stress of smaller campgrounds, especially if you are hauling a big rig.

Pro Tips
Request loops in the 300s along the river -- they get cottonwood shade, closer water access, and the best unobstructed views of the Teton Range and Blacktail Butte. The outer loops near the entrance are flat, exposed sagebrush with minimal shade.
Jackson is only about fifteen minutes south, so skip packing a full camp kitchen if you want. Stock up at the Albertsons in town for ice and groceries, and grab coffee at Persephone Bakery before heading out for a dawn paddle on the Gros Ventre River.
Bison regularly stroll through camp, especially early morning and dusk. Keep your food locker latched at all times -- not just for bears, but because a curious bison nosing around your cooler at 5 AM is a situation nobody wants. Bring a headlamp for the walk to the vault toilets; there is no ambient lighting in the loops.
