Aspen Ridge - Boulder Ridge
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The boulder field section has uneven footing with gaps between rocks — ankle-rolling territory if you're moving too fast or wearing soft trail runners. Take your time and watch your step, especially on the descent.
This is active bear country, particularly in late summer when berries ripen along the trail. Carry bear spray accessible on your hip, not buried in your pack, and make noise through the dense aspen sections where sight lines are limited.

Pro Tips
Hike the loop counterclockwise (Aspen Ridge first) — you'll gain elevation gradually through the shaded aspens instead of grinding up the more exposed Boulder Ridge in the heat, and the lake reveal hits harder from this direction.
The LSR Preserve parking lot is small and fills by 9 AM in summer with no overflow option. Arrive before 8 or after 3 PM, or you'll be turned away at the gate — this is one of the few trailheads in the Tetons that actually closes when full.
Late September is the sleeper pick here. The aspen groves on the first half of the loop turn electric gold, and the crowds thin dramatically after Labor Day. The reflection of golden aspens on Phelps Lake is one of the best photography opportunities in the park.
