What to Expect

Starting from Jackson Lake Lodge, this trail eases you in with a flat meander around Christian Ponds — a marshy stretch where moose sightings are practically guaranteed in the morning hours. Enjoy the gentle warmup, because once you hit the Emma Matilda junction and hang toward Grand View Point, the trail tilts upward through lodgepole pine forest with enough steady climbing to remind your legs they're working. The payoff is worth every switchback: a wide-open perch delivering one of the most complete panoramas in the park, with the entire Teton Range stretched across the western horizon, Jackson Lake glinting below, and the Jackson Hole valley sprawling south. Unlike the crowded overlooks along the main road, you actually earn this view, and the relative quiet up top feels like a reward in itself. Perfect for hikers who want something more than a stroll but aren't looking to suffer for it.

Safety Advisory

This is serious bear country. Carry bear spray, make noise on the forested climb, and be especially alert near Christian Ponds where grizzlies forage in early morning and evening.

The upper portion is exposed with no tree cover — afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast during July and August. If you see dark clouds building over the range, head down immediately rather than waiting it out on the ridge.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early from Jackson Lake Lodge to claim parking and catch the morning light hitting the Tetons head-on from the viewpoint — by midday the range falls into flat, washed-out light that kills photos.

Trail Tip

The Christian Ponds loop extension adds maybe an hour and keeps you in prime moose habitat, so if you're already out there, take the full circuit rather than doing an out-and-back.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars for the summit viewpoint — you can pick out climbers on the Grand Teton on clear mornings, and the bird-of-prey spotting from up top is exceptional.
